伊勢物語図花瓶（一対）

この一対の花瓶は、日本古典文学の名作『伊勢物語』の名場面を題材とし、在原業平と燕子花（かきつばた）の情景を優雅に描き上げた逸品です。物語第九段「東下り」に登場する三河国・八橋の場面では、都を離れた業平が旅の途上、水辺に群れ咲く燕子花を見て、五文字「かきつばた」を句頭に詠み込んだ和歌を詠じ、友と旅の情を分かち合います。

花瓶の意匠は、この水辺の光景と咲き誇る燕子花を背景に、雅やかな直衣姿の業平を描き、平安の風雅をそのまま写し取っています。柔らかな色彩と繊細な筆致は、自然と人との調和、そして旅情を漂わせます。

燕子花は古来より高貴な美を象徴し、また「勝ち（かち）つばた」に通じることから、縁起物としても尊ばれてきました。一対の構成は、左右で情景が呼応し、物語の流れと和歌の余情を空間の中で響かせます。ペアで飾ることで、対話するような情景の広がりと、調和・円満の象徴性が一層際立ちます。

Pair of Vases with “Tales of Ise” Design

This exquisite pair of vases depicts a celebrated scene from The Tales of Ise, a masterpiece of classical Japanese literature. In Episode 9, “The Journey to the East,” Ariwara no Narihira, having left the capital, comes upon a riverside in Yatsuhashi, Mikawa Province, where clusters of irises (kakitsubata) bloom in full splendor. Inspired by the flowers, he composes a waka poem, using the five syllables ka-ki-tsu-ba-ta at the beginning of each line, and shares the sentiment of travel with his companions.

The design captures this poetic moment, with Narihira dressed in elegant nōshi robes against a backdrop of flowing water and irises in bloom, embodying the refined elegance of the Heian court. Soft colors and meticulous brushwork convey a perfect harmony between nature and humanity, evoking a gentle sense of travel and nostalgia.

In Japanese culture, the iris symbolizes noble beauty and, through a play on words (kachi-tsubata), is also considered an auspicious emblem of victory and good fortune. The pair composition allows the two vases to converse visually—each complementing the other—extending the narrative across space. Displayed together, they not only heighten the scenic dialogue but also symbolize harmony, balance, and completeness.
